Glass Ceiling Remains: Equal Pay for Women Still a Stubbornly Elusive Goal
Austrian News Brief: March 2008

Men continue to earn nearly a third more than women in Austria, not because they are better qualified (they’re not), not because they are more ambitious (not that either), nor even because of men’s further professional advancement while the women are busy having children.
They make more simply because they are men, according to a new study by the Vienna Career Project of the Departments for International Organization Management and Non-Profit Management of the Vienna University for Business and Economics (WU).
"Interestingly, even when the women who take maternity leave are removed from the statistics, little changes," said Guido Strunk of the Research Institute for Health Management of the WU in Der Standard, Nov. 17. All the usual explanations fail to explain the results. "The striking answer to the question of what the reasons are for the difference in salaries is simple: Sex. Men earn more not because they accomplish more, can do more or are more motivated, but simply because they are men.
"And women are less successful simply because they are women."
