Human Rights & the Media

 

On Dec. 10, 1948, Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady and the first US Delegate to the United Nations, signed the first Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in Paris. She had shepherded the revolutionary document through a minefield of political challenges, and is universally credited with its success.

Webster University, in association with the American Women’s Association and the U.S. Embassy Vienna, is marking this extraordinary event 60 years on with a panel discussion on "Human Rights and the Media: Rights and Responsibilities?" Held at Amerika Haus, Friedrich-Schmidt-Platz 2. in the city’s first district, the event will mark the opening of the University’s Year of Human Rights on Dec 10th. The presentations will take a critical approach to the implementation of the Declaration, exploring the role of the media in promoting human rights.

The UDHR represented the first global expression of rights to which all human beings are inherently entitled.
