In her strong and touching collection of texts in We Are Still Here: Memoirs of a Child of Survivors from 2006, Rebecca Liebermann Nissel tells us her family history throughout the last five generations: from her grandparents’ prewar life in Europe, her parents’ experience of the Holocaust, her own childhood in Vienna, and the life of her American children right up to the births of her first grandchild. This event is organized by the Jewish Museum, Vienna.

CONTEMPORARY HUNGARIAN NOVEL

Authors Heike Flemming and Imre Kertész, the latter a Nobel Prize winner for literature in 2002, are junior visiting fellows at the Institute for Human Sciences. In this seminar, they will introduce us to the story of the contemporary Hungarian novel.

READING BY CAMPBELL JEFFERYS

Set in middle-class Australia, Jefferys’ book Hunter is a coming of age story – one that poses questions on nationality, social acceptance and life in Australian suburbia.  The novel follows the stories of two old men – one a Nazi from Austria and the other a north German soldier – and a teenage boy who comes into contact with the old men while doing odd jobs for seniors. Of German descent himself, the teenager becomes fascinated by the men and the stories they tell.
