Jazz Briefs: Noites Brasileiras
Brazilian Nights at Jazz club Porgy & Bess
Oct 01, 2012
October will continue the series of Brazilian Nights at Jazz club Porgy & Bess that began 24 Sept. A country that in many ways is almost a continent in itself, Brazil has long held a special place on the Vienna jazz scene, attracting many of the country’s top musicians.
One of the best will be saved for last: On 19 Oct., at 20:30, Egberto Gismonti performs solo, on both guitar and piano. Attracted early on to Maurice Ravel’s ideas of orchestration and chord voicings, and to "choro", a Brazilian popular music, Gismonti spanned his classical piano training to learn the guitar, experimenting with tunings and seeking new sounds.
He has since built a career dedicated to the belief that "popular" and "serious" idioms need not exist on opposite poles: "There’s no difference between the two kinds of music..." Gismonti continues his search to this day, building with undimmed energy, and bridging many divides.
