The University of Vienna, Austria’s largest academic institution, creates €1.13 billion purchasing power in Vienna thus creating 4,300 jobs in the Austrian capital, according to a recent study published by the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
Its 91,000 students, which make up 5% of Vienna’s citizens, have an estimated total spending power of €827 million, the largest portion of the spending power. Dr. Robert Musil, author of the study and head of the Academy’s Institute for Urban and Regional Research, estimated the total of the university’s value-added income – its properties, infrastructure investments but also its students and 9,400 employees.
The University of Vienna is the third largest employer in the city, topped by the City of Vienna administration – 21,400 employees – and the Stadtschulrat, Vienna’s education authority, with 11,300 employees.
