Rubik’s cube-shaped museum for Budapest

Hungarian government officials have announced plans for the construction of a national museum dedicated to the nation’s innovation, to be built in the shape of a large Rubik’s cube.

The site along the Danube bank near the Rákóczi bridge, crossed by Vienna rail traffic, will highlight Hungary's achievements, ideas, and inventions from the past 1,100 years, according to a statement from commissioner Balázs Fürjes on the government’s website.

Former Hungarian Playboy Editor-in-Chief Pétar Radnai initiated the idea to honour the Hungarian inventor Ernő Rubik, who invented his famous cube in 1974, followed by similar puzzles like Rubik’s Snake and Rubik’s 360. Construction is stated to begin in 2014, in time for the 40th anniversary of the cubed puzzle, at which point a travelling exhibition will raise awareness of the project and concept. The riverside museum’s doors will be opened by 2017.
