From wildfires in Bosnia and crop shortages in Moldova and Serbia, to the decreased water levels of the Danube in Bulgaria, the Balkan and Eastern European region is experiencing the effects of record heat and drought.
Following a record winter, the summer’s heat has wreaked havoc on potato and corn crops, especially in Serbia and Bosnia. Low river levels in the Bulgarian section of the Danube have disrupted navigation and river tourism traffic, leading to profit falls.
On 21 Aug., a state of emergency was declared in the Bosnian region of Boracko Lake due to wildfires, a problem also reported this summer in Serbia, Croatia, and Montenegro, according to AP.
