Austrian Art in India
Mar 10, 2013
The exhibition Artists in Multifunctions, consisting of works by 22 contemporary Austrian artists, opened on 9 February in the Rabindra Bhawan Gallery at Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. The collaborative exhibit, curated by Peter Weibel, included support from the National Academy of Art (Ministry of Culture) and the Embassy of Austria in New Delhi.
Conceptual emphasis was on the university as a place for experimentation and the artist’s role as a multifunctional individual. Some artists represented were Martin Arnold, Margarete Jahrmann, Gabriele Rothemann, and Romana Scheffknecht; among them staff from the University of Applied Arts. Works displayed were done in a range of mediums.
The showcase marks the first collaboration between the University of Applied Arts Vienna and the Lalit Kala Akademi in New Delhi. A bilateral cultural exchange includes an exhibition of works by Indian master painters, printmakers, and sculptors currently on display in Berlin, travelling to Vienna in July 2013.
