The Looshaus in Vienna’s 1st District is the setting for a monthly series of talks and music entitled Dem Ton ein
Wort, (A Word on Sound) addressing the word and ideas of the leading "craftsmen of modernism" Alfred Loos, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Arnold Schönberg, and including chamber music performed by some of Vienna’s musicians adds to the connection between thought and art. The next in the series, entitled Style and Idea: Ludwig Wittgenstein and Arnold Schönberg takes place on March 20 and will feature Austro-American philosopher Dr. Allan JanikAuthor of Wittgenstein's Vienna, and Dr. Christian Meyer of the Arnold Schönberg discussing the contributions to 20th century culture Ludwig Wittgenstein, considered the 20th century’s most influential philosopher, and the great Viennese emigre composerArnold Schönberg. The ties between the philosophy of Wittgenstein and Schönberg's complex late Romanticism evolving into the atonally that helped drive the critical modernism of Vienna in the 1900’s is the backbone of this presentation, followed by a performance of Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht, op 4, with Bojidara Kouzmanova-Vladar, violin, Matthias Bartolomey, 'cello, and Magda Amara, piano.
Future topics of discussion include The Vienna Philharmonic from 1842-1920 with speakers Dr. Clemens Hellsber, director of the Vienna Philharmonic and Gert Korentschnig, culture editor of the Austrian daily Kurier, on 17 April. Dr. Ray Monk, author of Ludwig Wittgenstein, The Duty of Genius, and one of the world’s foremost experts on the philosopher will discuss The Life of Ludwig Wittgenstein During his Time in Cambridge, 22 May, with the music of Benjamin Britten, performed by 'cellist, Matthias Bartolomey.
The series concludes on 11 June with Kurier's Korentschnig returning to talk about The Philharmonic Families: Craftsmanship and Culture as Family Tradition, with VPO clarinettists Ernst, Daniel and Andreas Ottensamer.
