Thanks to the Greens, Vienna’s bike lanes are getting a new paint job, to enhance visibility and improve safety, according to the city’s Transportation Ministry.

The pilot starts with test routes at the intersection Bellariastraße /Dr.-Karl-Renner-Ring and on the Gürtel parallel to Westbahnhof, each between 10 and 30 metres long. Vice Mayor Maria Vassilakou (Green Party) wants to paint them dark green. The costs for colouring the total of 1,123 kilometers of cycle paths are estimated to be €10 million. Dangerous spots will stay red.

The city also presented the "Viennese diagonal" of of dotted stripes, meant to end the waiting and unpleasant confrontations with limited space and sharp turns at crossroads.
