Scandal over fowl art

Vienna Review

The website www.katholisches.info, associated with the traditionalist Pius brothers, criticised a poster promoting an upcoming exhibition by Austrian artist Deborah Sengl, displaying a crucified chicken. The author described the photo as "utterly tasteless blasphemy" and "artistically not very original". For Sengl, the chicken, wearing a crown of thorns and a loincloth, highlights the "suffering of animals in food production". The chicken will be on display until 29 Sept. at the Museum St. Peter an der Sperr in Wiener Neustadt. The museum used to be a church – just another instance of "tasteless blasphemy", according to the religious website.
