Schiele’s home in Tulln

Artist Egon Schiele’s birthplace at the train station in Tulln was opened for the first time with a ceremony on 15 June.

The icon of Viennese Modernism was born in the Lower Austrian town in 1890, the son of a railway station inspector. His first 11 years were spent in an apartment at the station, the rooms of which have been redesigned to create a picture of the artist and his early life. Schiele’s experiences there influenced his artistic work, as sketches show, depicting the station and the concept of mobility.

The living quarters display includes texts written by Schiele himself, members of his family and contemporary witnesses, telling stories about their lives with the aid of modern audio.

Tulln is also home to the Egon Schiele Museum, and in 2014, the museum and birthplace will be joined by the Schiele Path, leading visitors through important sites of Schiele’s youth in the town.
