Sunset at MQ
On summer nights Vienna’s favourite courtyard ignites
Jul 08, 2013
The sun has just set and your Schnitzel and Sommer Spritzer are settling in, revitalising the sparkle in your eyes after a long day, pulling up the corners of your mouth.
Now it’s time to move again, scintillate the senses. Time to dance. Time for the MuseumsQuartier.
The MQ is not just master paintings and sunbathing on the "enzos" in the courtyard.
Between the Leopold and mumok museums is a space pulsating with culture, art, music and pleasure.
Weekend Sounds
You might start your night at the outdoor seating at "daily", maybe cheering on the remote-control boat races at the "Aquadrome" in the reflecting pool, and grooving to DJs supplied by the eclectic radio station FM4. From noon to 22:00, every Saturday, Sunday and holiday (good weather permitting), Weekend Sounds will get your baseline juices flowing, with soul, funk, hip-hop, and electronica under the stars.
Art Night in the MQ
Moonlight is known to arouse the inner critic, giving occasion for the two-for-one deal (only €12) to the Leopold Museum and mumok.
Every second Thursday of the month, from 17:00 – 21:00, the museums are open late and even offer tours. At the Leopold, visitors can see the permanent exhibitions as well as Manfred Bockelmann’s Drawing Against Oblivion. At the mumok there is more on offer: in progress displays work from classical modernism to performance art and mumok is hosting Albert Oehlen’s contemporary paintings and collages.
frame[o]ut - digital summer screenings
For movie lovers, every Friday and Saturday, from 21:00 – 24:00, the film festival frame[o]ut will show international, independent and experimental films, contemporary documentaries and shorts. It begins on 12 July, with Elektro Moskva, a Russian documentary (English subtitles) about the development of the electronic age behind the Iron Curtain. Other highlights include, The Chemical Brothers: Don’t Think, a full-length concert flick, and Peaches Does Herself, a musical about finding identity in transsexuality.
Impulstanz
Impulstanz performances also make their appearance for the 30th Vienna International Dance Festival. With thousands of dancers and choreographers in workshops and performances, this is one of the largest contemporary dance festivals in the world. For exact dates and times, see impulstanz.com. On 9 July the festival opens with Trajal Harrell and Friends: "License to Party".
Café Leopold
When the night sky turns from royal blue to black, it’s time to break out your own moves. The well-loved Café Leopold is split into two distinct spaces: a clean-cut bar area, with a glass cube room hovering over the courtyard and an elongated dance floor downstairs, with psychedelic light visuals. But the collective vibe is constantly groovy. On Friday and Saturday nights, DJs spin electronic, hip-hop, soul and funk, for a classy yet unpretentious crowd. On Swing Sunday, it is the go-to location for lindy hop and swing enthusiasts to strut, flip and twirl.
With "Museum" in its name one sometimes forgets that some of the most memorable moments at the Quartier are those had after dark.
