Tradition and Vision at the Looshaus

The Looshaus on Michaelerplatz is the setting for a monthly series of talks and music entitled Dem Ton ein Wort, (A Word on Sound) addressing the words and ideas of the leading "craftsmen of modernism" Alfred Loos, Ludwig Wittgenstein and Arnold Schönberg.
The series includes chamber music performed by prominent Viennese musicians to compliment the ideas surrounding the era combining thought and art.
The next event in the series, entitled Tradition and Vision: The Vienna Philharmonic 1842-1920, takes place on April 17th, featuring Dr. Clemens Hellsberg, director of the Vienna Philharmonic and Gert Korentschnig, culture editor of the Austrian daily Kurier. They will explore the origins of the Vienna Philharmonic from its opening in 1842 up to the years preceding the Nazi era, a period which has received much attention due to the 75th anniversary of Austria’s Anschluss in March. Following the presentation, Dr. Hellsberg’s sons will be performing chamber music, with Dominik Hellsberg on Violin, and Benedikt Hellsberg on Violoncello.
The series continues on May 22nd with a discussion entitiled Ludwig Wittgenstein in Cambridge, led by the acclaimed author of Ludwig Wittgenstein, The Duty of Genius, Dr. Ray Monk. The event will feature the music of Benjamin Britten, performed by cellist, Matthias Bartolomey.
The series concludes on 11 June with the Kurier’s Korentschnig returning to talk about The Philharmonic Families: Craftsmanship and Culture as Family Tradition, with the Philharmonic clarinettists Ernst Ottensamer, and his sons Daniel and Andreas.
