Vienna nominated to host Olympic Games in 2028

Vienna may be nominated to host the 2028 Olympic Games, depending on the outcome of a local referendum from 7 – 9 March. It wouldn’t be the city’s first application. In 1964, Vienna already lost the role of host to Tokyo. Back then, the application documents cost 200.000 Schilling (about €14,500), while for the next Olympic Games, according to Wolfgang Prochaska of the Municipal Sports Bureau MA 51, it would require "millions of euros".

If the Viennese decide on the Olympic Games, the next step will be to commission studies to test the sports arenas and playing fields in and outside Vienna for Olympic suitability and create design concepts for renovations and new construction. As of yet, the expense and time frame for the necessary studies are unknown, as is who will bear the cost.

If the International Olympic Committee chooses Vienna, it will affect local infrastructure, particularly public transportation and civic security measures. In the Austrian media, most agree that the City of Vienna will need financial partners, given that London spent €12 billion for the 2012 Olympics.
