Wäschermädelball: From Laundress to Princess

Amiss from ball season for decades, the Wiener Wäschermädelball (Viennese Laundresses Ball) will take place on 16 February in the Etablissement Gschwandner in the 17th District. In the 19th and 20th century, Laundresses’ Balls were well-attended public events on the outskirts of Vienna. The audience consisted mainly young laundresses and destitute men, but disappeared along with the occupation at the beginning of the last century.

The Echo Medienhaus organized a re-kindling of the tradition. The Tanzschule Demel will open the event, which will include spectacles like a burlesque show, live acts with Wiener Liedern and girls with hawker's tray selling cigars and Schnäpse (fruit spirits). The dress code for ladies is "laundress-like" and men can come in a newsboy look, or both can also don traditional ball attire.
