Their reduced re-recordings of old Austropop songs were a great success in 2015, both artistically and commercially. The second duo work by Viennese songwriting greats Ernst Molden and Nino Mandl, aka Der Nino aus Wien, released this spring under the title "Zirkus," ties in aesthetically with "Unser Österreich," but treads completely different paths in terms of content: With jointly written songs, "Zirkus" provides the atmospheric soundtrack to "Ein Clown. Ein Leben" (A Clown. A Life), Harald Aue's film documentary about the (Circus Roncalli) circus director Bernhard Paul, which has finally been released after a long pandemic delay. In their wistfulness, the songs of Molden/Mandl form a nice contrast to various "circus" associations, and there are at least two cover versions again this time anyway. However, they didn't find what they were looking for in the Austropop canon, but in their own work: The Nino-from-Vienna classic "Es geht immer ums Vollenden" is, newly arranged, represented on "Zirkus" as well as "I siech wos Finstas", Molden's reinterpretation of Bonnie Prince Billy's "I See A Darkness". The latter is, strictly speaking, a triple cover: the song is famous in Johnny Cash's interpretation; Molden had already recorded his Viennese version solo in 2008.
