The well-known story of Baron von Trapp, who has to flee Austria with his family in 1938. Its American musical version, overlong and extra schmaltzy, is credited to Rodgers and Hammerstein. Oskar Werner was intended for the male lead role, but he cancelled because of downplaying the historical background ("Man waltzes his way across the Alps").
