Rita, a mysterious beauty, has been suffering from amnesia since an accident. The naive Betty, who dreams of stardom, comes to her aid. From then on, the two women are welded together by a chain of mysterious events. For a weak hour, Lynch's film can be read as an affectionate, slyly subtle approximation of various Hitchcock thrillers - but then the playful conundrum is more than enough for itself.
