Choreographer Gastón (decorative: Gael García Bernal) and fire-fascinated dancer Ema (explosive: Mariana Di Girólamo) are committed to a nonconformist lifestyle. But when their eight-year-old adopted son disfigures her sister in an arson attack, a line is crossed for Ema and she turns the boy over to the care of Child Protective Services. A visually extravagant, intense film about the "rebellion against traditional family ties and their reinvention in unusual constellations" (Barbara Schweizerhof).
