Two family stories, a century and two metropolises merge into one person: Weina Zhao. Her parents named their little daughter "Vienna" when they emigrated from Beijing to Austria around 1990. Weina's journey back into history - from the Cultural Revolution to modern China - touches on major themes of the 21st century: migration, identity, coming to terms with the past. "Today" is devoid of history (Shanghai scenery city, Mao Tse-tung experience gastro), but traces of images remain: Uropa's feature films, Grandma's propaganda films, family photos, some police-dated: 'How convenient,' Zhao says. 'Weiyena' is melancholy as a form of questioning, Schmäh as a style of thinking." (Dr. Robnik)
