With "Quo vadis, Aida", filmmaker Jasmila Žbanić, who was born in Bosnia, and cinematographer Christine A. Maier, who hails from Graz, delve deep into European contemporary history 25 years after the mass murder in Srebrenica. Working as a translator for the United Nations, the titular heroine is powerless as she watches a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions befall the town and her own family in the form of the Bosnian-Serb general Ratko Mladić and his army. The gripping film, co-produced by Barbara Albert and nominated for an Oscar for Best Non-English Language Production, is dedicated to the 8372 dead of Srebrenica. (Michael Omasta)
