Civil War veteran Captain Kidd (Tom Hanks) picks up ten-year-old Johanna (Helena Zengel, of "System Blasters" fame) on the Texas prairie. Six years earlier, she was kidnapped by the indigenous Kiowa people, while her family was killed in the raid. Against her will, Kidd is now supposed to take her to her biological relatives. "Director Greengrass already cultivated the Hanks brand with 'Captain Phillips'; now he takes a stab at John Ford's 'The Searchers,' which criticized whiteness more explosively in 1956, via door-frame quote.
