Maria Rodrigues, a married woman in her late 40s, starts working in the cleaning crew of the Paris Academy of Arts. She likes the job because cleaners "see everything and say nothing," plus they make the world a little more beautiful. Through exposure to modern art, contact with student Naomi and rock'n'roll janitor Hubert, she learns to step outside herself and possibly change her life. "Maria Dreams" is an emancipation story of the enjoyable kind. The academic art establishment is lovingly taken for a ride, and Karin Viard, in the title role, masters the clunky scenes as charmingly as the dramatic ones. (Michael Omasta)
